Joe and Kate have formed a unique mix of poetry and artwork. Joe says that he is not really a poet: he just writes stories that rhyme. Kate produces paintings depicting Joe’s poetry or Joe creates a poem as a companion piece to one of Kate’s paintings. These paintings are for sale as Giclee' prints in various sizes.
Kate and Joe live on a farm in Midwest Missouri. Their deep love of the outdoors has led Kate, Joe and their horses across the plains of Kansas to the mountains in Colorado, Wyoming, Utah and Nevada. Many of their experiences in the wild have served to inspire Kate’s paintings. Kate feels that, “When you experience something yourself, you’re able to paint with genuine emotion. I think my paintings make you feel the cold of the snow and the warmth of the sun in my spring meadows. I also want my paintings to be believable and convincing. I want the viewer to feel I must have been there; even though the event may have taken place hundreds of years ago, and to see its historical perspective through my eyes.
The accuracy and fine detail of her work are far from accidental. They are a result of both intense research and the critical eye of her husband. Kate says she has come to rely a great deal on Joe’s good taste and constructive comments.
Most of her western paintings depict the life of the frontier – not the Hollywood version, but the actual day-to-day trials and challenges faced by the people who lived the adventure. Kate truly hopes her works contribute to the preservation of a small part of history for future generations.
